MERCENARY
Soldiers for hire. Came about during the 1st age, with powers that made them stronger than entire platoons of soldiers. Their jobs range from bounty hunting to fighting entire armies single handed. Some will stay with a client for an extended period of time, while others look for short term freelance work. Each mercenary has a say in the terms of their contract, and live by their own moral code while also obeying the rules of the League of Shaman; the moral leaders of the mercenary clans who oversee their activities to prevent war crimes and escalation of force.
Form small clans to pool resources. A mercenary working for the League of Shaman is commonly called a “Freelancer”, since they typically hold short term contracts and move around a lot.
SAMURAI
Soldiers who use melee weapons and techniques. The most common type of mercenary.
The term, Samurai, was born after the establishment of the Daimyo, as a way of differentiating them from the emerging gunslinger profession.
While favouring blades, axes and staffs, samurai typically carry a side arm.
GUNSLINGER
Soldiers who use firearms and long range techniques.
Railguns became miniaturised around 350A1, quickly becoming adapted by mercenaries. Most sword swinging mercenaries can deflect bullets with their enhanced reflexes, so samurai didn’t become extinct entirely, but these new long range mercenaries commanded a high price from clients for their ability to handle jobs at a distance.
SENTINAL
Soldiers who favour unarmed combat, using techniques to enhance their attack power.
Durable warriors, a favourite choice for bodyguard jobs. Will still carry weapons, but focus their training into martial arts which allow them to compete with even armed opponents, usually by disarming their weapons or breaking their bones.
hunter
Demon hunters, who use their enhanced abilities to hunt down large, dangerous beasts.
With most Demon too large to be taken down by the average civilian, villages are reliant on Hunters to keep their stores stocked.
Their training includes a focus on respecting the natural order, with overhunting and poaching being punishable offences.
SMith
Create and sell weapons to other mercenaries.
The code prevent them from selling to civilians, and restrict inventory based on the mercenaries license (For example, a firearm can only by sold to someone cleared for a gun license).
Some travel while other set up shops in towns where mercenaries pass through.
Builder
Use energy manipulation to create or repair structures.
Often contracts include a clause about paying a builder to repair damage caused during a job, with the payment coming out of the warrior mercenaries cut.
Most prefer to set up shops, rather than traveling around.
MONK
Spiritual warriors who do charity work, like Demon relocation, diplomatic assistance, medicine and presiding over funeral preparations.
Their work is payed by the League itself using funds from military contracts, allowing their work to be free for the clients.
Despite the nature of their work, Monks are trained in martial arts along with the academic studies.
Diplomat
Trained in conflict de-escalation, these monks are often sought after to solve disputes peacefully. They are trained in shield techniques to protect their clients during a job, with their training focused on forgien customs and psychology.
doctor
Trained in using energy manipulation to heal, by fixing bones, curing illness, repairing wounds etc. The more academic of monks, Doctors will often research new healing techniques to expand the collective skill set, by sharing their findings at local temples with students.
They sometimes create local practices to heal more efficiently.
Tamer
Trained in handling Demon; communicating and if necessary, how to pacify without killing. Often called in if Demon are moving territory into Mortal settlements.
Will typically have a Demon partner as support.
undertaker
Prepare dead bodies; remove the flesh and tribute it to the family or tribes patron Demon shrine, ensuring that the deceased is returned to the cycle of nature. The bones are incinerated and ashes given to the family, or placed in the crypt beneath the temple of Terra.
Jailer
Take in captured bounties and deliver them to the central prison at the Temple of Thunder.
Set up shop at Chapels of Punishment, where bounties are recorded and the payment given in advance, and haded to the mercenary who completes them.
Trained in restraining techniques to prevent escape.
EXORCIST
Fight Demin; restless spirits. They are trained in identifying Demin types and discovering clues as to why the Demin appeared, then ascertaining the best way to banish them.
People seek them out in need of protection from evil or fortune from the gods.
NINJA
Serve the Shaman directly. Trained in stealth and espionage, their duties include securing and delivering information, assassination and protection.
A shadowy profession, infamous for severing ties to their previous life and devoting themselves to the code.
Typically work in three man teams; each having a specific role and supporting the others.
TRACKER
Skilled in following trails and archery. Use ninja tools to disorientate targets and support their teammates from a distance.
TRAPPER
Skilled in trap setting and loosing potential tails. Designed to counter enemy trackers and restricting enemy field of movement.
ASSASSIN
Stealth warriors, skilled in taking out targets without being seen.
Work in tandem with tracker and trappers, rather than duelling an opponent.
spy
Trained to infiltrate organisations and households and extract information, or keep tabs on a potential target. A controversial profession that is often avoided, to prevent starting an incident between countries. Lack advanced combat techniques, so rely on support from a ninja team.
Watcher
Hidden bodyguards that follow the Shaman everywhere.
In the temples of the elements, they stay hidden in the rafters, as not to alarm anybody to their presence.
Executioner
Trained in the five point death strike technique; a method of quickly stopping the heart from beating, causing an instant and painless death.
Executions are only authorised if all five shaman agree that a convict should receive the death penalty, which is an extremely rare occurrence, and only happens in the most extreme circumstance. The execution is carried out immediately after the verdict, with the executioner dropping from above and delivering the killing strike before the convicted even know they are there.
LEAGUE OF SHAMAN
The league was shorthand for the mercenary industry as a whole, before the rise of the PMN and mercenary corporations.
Now it refers to the organisation as a whole, not just the council of Shaman.
CLAN
Small collections of Mercenaries that pool resources and take jobs as a team. By establishing a brand they are able to attract clients more easily, as word of their deeds spreads and is associated with the clan as a whole.
RONIN
A mercenary with no clan. Typically find it hard to get work, but is often preferred by loner types.
ROUGE
Blacklisted mercenaries or an entire clan.
Were excommunicated by the Shaman for breaking the code and are considered hostile; they aren’t allowed within temples and smiths are instructed to not sell to them (though not all follow this law).
They are still allowed access to Doctors, however.
Many clients will avoid a blacklisted clan, with most turning to criminal clients who don’t care about the Shaman’s code, and are employed for anything from extortion, smuggling, piracy to assassination.
SHAMAN
The 5 shaman lead the League of Mercenaries, also known as the League of Shaman. The council oversees the direction the League is taking, analyse foreign affairs and deliver judgement to bounties.
Each decision requires a certain level of approval (a single shaman can grant license, but all 5 must be unanimous to declare an execution).
Each oversees an element, and takes a role in the councils decision making.

DAIMYO
Lead small collections of clans, by acting as a Shaman in all but name.
Allowed for greater protection and profits for the League, by expanding manpower and coordinating mercenary activity.
Their presence led to a Mercenary civil war in 12A2, between rival Daimyo who used their mercenary armies to claim territory and power. The war was ended when the Daimyo was abolished in 68A2, however Mercenaries fell out of favour as clients sought protection from the Private Mercenary Nation, which sold military support through PMC (Private Mercenary Corporations).
